Here’s what I would say about Darktable, I think.
If you have an Android device, you must know that it’s a great option for photographers. You get a lot of features built directly into Darktable that are quite useful: an extremely easy to use interface, a rich metadata panel that allows you to do lots of editing on the fly, the ability to sync your entire library with just one click, a beautiful dark theme, etc.
So here’s what I would say about it: I love it. It’s a fantastic little app, the best for me ever in the app store, and I use it often.
For me, that’s enough for me to recommend it, and it’s enough for Darktable to be my main photo viewer. I love Darktable because of it’s simplicity – you just get a simple interface, a few powerful filters and a ton of presets, and all of that is ready on-the-fly, which makes editing and finding the right look really easy. It’s beautiful! I look forward to being able to get a photo as I’m walking around in my city for the first time with the light from a tree behind me, or a city sunset in the evening of the same day, and Darktable is good for finding what looks good in those situations.
For me, what really sold Darktable for me was that it was not only a great photo program, but it also made that camera as beautiful as possible. I really loved that the program showed you all the light and shadows from a camera from every angle. It’s quite a revelation if you are a camera photographer, that you can see all of the lighting around you, and that even at sunset, you see the beautiful shadows. The program allows you to adjust the brightness and contrast, and the photos come out of the camera beautifully. You can play with the settings yourself, and the best part about this is that there is a huge amount of presets that you can select – it is a full-range of lighting and moods.
My favorite feature of Darktable is that you can create images of anything. We all know that photo editing is subjective, and we have probably all seen photos of people, landscapes and buildings that have been edited in ways we wouldn’t be completely comfortable with.
