In the statement, neither man offered words of support, but both defended the Court’s decision as well as the Constitution’s guarantee that same-sex couples have equal rights and obligations.

“The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down part of the Defense of Marriage Act is an example of the judicial overreach we have seen from the Court over the last several years,” they said. “It sets a dangerous precedent for future challenges to same-sex marriage around the country.”
Hatch and Orrin are two of seven members of the Senate Judiciary Committee that voted to block an attempt to repeal the legal effects of DOMA last Wednesday.
The two Republicans called for the Senate to hold hearings on how to “work within the Constitution” and how to “address these challenges.”
The Judiciary Committee voted 9-8 along party lines to block any consideration of a marriage equality bill.
