This is the most common vocal issue with new bass. I do try to sing as low as my voice will allow. While I have never had a singer get a song wrong on my behalf, I have heard bass who sang at lower notes than they could.
I have also heard bass sing a bit lower than they actually are.
Why is there a lot of feedback?
This is an important issue that I hear in quite a few new bass players. Bass often has the quality to vibrate the vocal chords at the same rate that the vocal chords vibrating are making an audible sound. Some people can’t sing and have to keep holding the instrument against the vocal chords in order to make a sound, while others have no feedback at all. In some cases the only way to make the bass sound like someone else that doesn’t know how it sounds is to make them do something that they know they don’t like. The other reason is often that bassists do a good job of suppressing their feedback.
Sometimes the vocal sounds are so hard to identify that it’s hard to figure out what they’re singing. If you’re a bassist that’s interested in making new bass players sing like you do, you should listen to some of these examples of bass on vocals that don’t have feedback.

On vocals I typically have a problem with a lot of the resonance in the middle register with the bass.
Here is the same pattern with an open hi-hat (right ear). Note that it’s harder to see the resonance on the low part of the guitar.
In this example, there can be a lot of resonance with open strings, because the strings are playing in a narrow range.
There are three things that are common with bass players that are not common with guitars/vocalists.
1) Bass players tend to play to the full range, often with fullness of sound and no feedback. They seem to want to make things “go”.
2) Bass players often play through closed tuning. They tend to play the lowest note in the fretboard, or the octave of the guitar to make those higher notes sound full and crisp which isn’t so good for singing.
3) Bass players tend to sing a little bit higher than they should because they’ve learned how to play higher notes with less feedback.
