A harmonious song is one that’s all about harmony. So, as a good songwriter, you’ve got to make it feel good. And there’s no perfect song. A great one will do that in a million small increments. And that’s why this list works so well, the songs which fit these criteria are those which are great at making people feel. I mean who doesn’t want a feeling? If there’s a song that I’d listen to over and over again, that is a good song! And that’s what I mean by feeling. When people feel something, it makes your blood rush.
What about the songs so good, that everyone knows about them? Are they harmonious?
There’s a song called ‘Wake Me When September Ends’. It’s a song about people and their feelings for each other – it’s really nice. Or in the same vein, ‘The End of the World’ by Elton John. You should hear that song a lot. That’s a song about feeling. That’s a good song! I guess that was probably the same as when I wrote ‘The Sound of Music’s’ [Chinatown scene]. That song came about because I was listening to the radio at night, and it was very depressing, very dark. I couldn’t sleep. I mean, I’m all about harmony, but I’m not so much about listening to it as I am for it. I’m all about the feeling. So that song turned it around because it felt good!
Another good song is ‘We Never Lied’ by Michael Kiwanuka. You should really listen to that one a lot! That’s a song about feeling. I can only think of one song that fits all these criteria! When I think of a good song – you know, a great song with good mood, a great song about feeling – that’s what I’ll put on a playlist! The only thing that needs to be done is to make these songs feel good again. Now that you mention it, the songs that I know and love – I’ve already told you about ‘One by One’ and ‘One by Two’ but there are tons of great songs that have already been listed but need another place to fit into!
