“I do,” he says. “You don’t even sing that way with a girl. I mean, you might be a singer, but that doesn’t mean you should sing that way in front of everybody, and I want to ask you if you like it. You’d have to come on my show and dance around my stage and sing. You never know. A lot of people do. I mean, we’re talking real good.”
You’re not the girl in question, but there’s something in the way he says those words — how he says them, his cadence — that you think could be pretty interesting, if just for his own amusement. So, you decide to take steps to test your curiosity.
“This is my test,” he says. “If you want to sing along with me, just sing along.”
He says this to you. You listen and listen until it feels really good.
“There,” he says. “That’s good.”
Then he says, “You can sing if you want, but you’ll have to put the lyrics down somewhere. You have to sing them for me.”
You agree to listen and start with a simple, short song, as you’ve been told only by your mentor:

(You have been instructed to sing it out loud as you sing, and you sing “How the Mighty Have Fallen.”)
When you reach the middle, your song is interrupted by a new chorus.
“This is the last chorus,” he says. “It’s time to sing those old songs we used to sing. Then you can stop talking. You get to sing about the good old days when we’d just get up and dance around.”
You stop singing in front of your music teacher, and instead stand to the side and watch the girls in the crowd sing.
“You’re not a singer,” you tell them as you join them in the chorus. “Just listen.”
They go on singing “You’re a hero in my heart,” and you notice there’s no reaction. It doesn’t make any sense, you think. He could tell you, but that wouldn’t be cool… So you continue to watch the girls and sing.
“Are you going to sing along with me or not?” he asks you as they sing.
You hesitate.
