What a difference a few weeks makes when you’re a college football coach trying to win your first big game since Jan. 10.
The Miami Hurricanes lost their second straight game on a Sunday night to Wake Forest 35-28 in triple overtime, a game that featured a couple of critical turnovers in the closing minutes of the game. On top of everything that went wrong, Miami is now 0-8 since the start of December — just one week shy of the team’s bye week. No one’s talking about whether the Hurricanes are a bowl team, but coach Jim McElwain is already looking ahead to his next opponent — and is hoping to avoid another Sunday night embarrassment.
“Anytime you go through adversity and you go through that loss, you’re going to have an identity crisis,” McElwain told reporters after the loss. “That’s something that our guys are going to have to work through.”
McElwain was asked to sum up the Hurricanes as a unit, and though he might get defensive about talking about individual players, he still did more than most coach can say in a single day. First off, he referred to the Miami offense as “incomplete,” and used a word that many fans have come to associate with his team over the past two seasons.
“We were struggling in a couple of areas,” he said. “We had one of our runs with (Devontae Booker) and (Michael Ford) go right. And he’s not as fast as he once was, he’s not as quick. And that’s something we’ve had a ton of throughout the course of
