It was developed by the early 20th century musicologist Edward Feser. Semi-tone was originally defined as an interval in which half of the tones are greater than the tonic pitch (2nd in the piano scale, or 2nd in the major scale). Feser believed the second tone was the tone of the harmonic minor scale. Thus, we see the harmonic minor scale and harmonic minor tone – a common name for the tonic tone. The harmonic minor scale has two major scales. The major scale is called the major triad and also has one major tone and three minor tones in a chain. One or more of the pitches are called minor and one or more are called major.
When a string is tuned using an integer step setting (A=440) then it is half-tone and half-quarter tone. When the string is tuned using an arbitrary step setting (A=440 / 2) then it is semi-tone and half-quarter tone. This gives the following:

Semi-tone and half-quarter tone (or half-inch tone, as noted earlier) are often mistaken for each other, since both are half-tone. However, in music, semitones and half-tones are separated by half-tones.
To be clear, semi is not defined in the above example but is an arbitrary step. If you prefer semitones to half-tones, then you must learn this more advanced section.
Note: a common misconception among beginners is that you cannot learn music from one method alone. There are many methods to learn music, but only one method will provide a long-term result. A variety of other methods may offer a different result, but with less effort to learn and more learning ability. For this reason, if you have not started by learning the basic fundamentals then beginning simply with the basic skills of scale and fret placement may prove the quickest route to long-term success.
