Why is ‘a pitch’ called pitch?
In this week’s episode we’ll answer some of these questions.
Let’s say that you have a ball thrown at you, and you want to be able to tell where the pitch is going.
In order to do this, you are going to need to look at what happens when you throw the ball.
We’ll first look at things that occur when the ball hits the ground, and then look at the position of the ball when it is thrown.
First things first
The “base of support” (basis of support – see below) of a ball is simply the part of the surface of the ball with the greatest gravitational force, the surface (the bottom two lines on the picture below) with the least gravitational force (the bottom right line).
If you have a ball at rest with no force (which it won’t be until a force is applied to the ball), the surface (the bottom line) of the ball will be the “base of support.”
Think of a baseball as if you were pitching a baseball, and the rest of the surface is the mound, that is the area outside of the ball’s surface gravity, or “basis of support.” We’re also going to assume that there are five lines of support in baseball, with zero gravity between each of them.
We’ll look at all the forces acting upon the ball, as well as the gravitational force (the “base of support”, in this case) from just the bottom two lines.
As we’ve learned up to now in this series, we will assume that there is a surface gravity, or baseline of support for the entire surface of the ball, not just the bottom two lines.
Let’s start by looking at how it affects a baseball
Falling
If you look at a ball that hits the ground and comes into contact with one or more other objects, for example two tennis balls, the ground is only affected by the force that the tennis balls have on each other, because they are not touching the ground at all. If we try to calculate how much weight the gravity of the ground has, then we will not get any more accurate answers, because we have removed the force that is on the ground (the tennis balls).
The following table is an estimate.
Note that the table below assumes that there is at least one tennis ball on the ground and that the first one touches the
