A Texas man arrested Thursday after police say he told officers he killed his wife on purpose before turning the gun on himself was an aspiring rapper and songwriter who had just released his second album, police said.
Michael Daniel Jones, 49, of Dallas, appeared in a Dallas County court on Friday morning charged with capital murder by discharging a firearm and cruelty to children, police said.
Police said on May 2 Jones told an officer outside his home he shot his wife, Kim Anderson, during an argument at their home in the 800 block of Mockingbird Boulevard. They said Jones said she was holding a pistol when he pulled the trigger accidentally but that Anderson was shot six times. A 7-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl also were injured but survive.
Officers found Anderson dead inside the home and found a loaded 9 mm semiautomatic pistol and a handgun hidden inside the garage, authorities said.
The weapon was stolen from Jones’ vehicle days before Anderson’s death, police said.
Jones had been arrested four times before on a variety of charges involving drug distribution and weapons violations, and was also arrested in April on a drug charge, a police report indicated, and on a charge of driving on a suspended license.
Jones is scheduled for an initial appearance in court on Nov. 3.
