-First, I learn how to play in a regular band style. My friends at the band’s school were a bit intimidated, but I figured that I could do it if I tried as hard as they did.
-You do it in one of a couple of ways: I sit on the uke and play, or I use the thumbpick. I have both, but I prefer playing in the thumbpick because it makes the picking feel cleaner and more natural.
So, then, you get to the solo! Well, it’s not very easy. It’s a little harder than the last one, but not as bad as the last one.
You’re the one who gets the first chord. What are the most common problems with playing that chord?
-The first chord is very easy to perform as a beginner and as you get better with your technique. It’s just the wrong chord for your guitar.
-I use my thumbpick and the fingers of my right hand to play chords, but that only works if the music requires it. If it’s a song that’s played on one of the keys, the key of the guitar is generally going to be different.
-I try to be able to play all of the keys. With this one, I was just trying to play the first three notes of each chord. When I did that, the chord became much easier.
That one is a bit more difficult to play. What got you in the mood for that chord?
-I was playing a couple chords from this one and then I felt I’d gotten used to the way the chords were played and what I liked in the songs. So after I had played them a couple times, I started to play them in other keys. I played it slowly and gradually got used to the keys. I didn’t want to rush. I didn’t want to feel the pressure of performing.
-I just used the thumbpick for the first chord and then went by the ear. I just played it slow and got used to it.
You start singing some of the solo now…
-The solo in that one actually sounds a little better than the previous ones. I was trying to pick different notes and I got them to sing and make the melody clear. The solo was a lot more clear and I really thought I could make it sound like I wanted it to.
