What kind of music do you teach the beginners? What songs do you teach? What are your favourite types of music to listen to? Is there any kind of lesson plan you follow?
We always love new music and if there is an active ukulele community around the UK it’s because people are always in tune with the instrument – which is great news for new music teachers. As for music, we don’t think that there is any kind of ‘ideal’ ukulele music – it’s really about the people who have the time and passion to try something new. In the course of three years we’ve already played more than 1,000 ukuleles and have had many people ask us about teaching ukulele as well as playing and singing ukulele – we really love what we do and are inspired by everyone who plays ukulele – it’s such an awesome way to play music.
Do you think that teachers are often scared to start teaching ukulele? If so, do you think that this fear is a reflection of the way the ukulele has been made into a classed instrument?
The fear that people have of playing a new instrument is certainly a reflection of the way that ukulele has been made into a classed instrument. While teachers do start by making the ukulele “cool”, from there it’s usually a case of having a discussion with the child and a proper lesson plan before the child begins. It can take a couple of months before a student really gets where he or she wants to be with an ukulele.
