DUBLIN (Reuters) – The European Court of Justice is expected to rule on new data protection legislation by the end of this year but might postpone an initial timetable, lawyers said on Wednesday, a development likely to stoke political tensions in Brussels as governments grapple with rising public anger towards mass surveillance programmes.

The ECJ is due this month to rule on new legislation setting out how internet service providers (ISPs) must handle personal data. The court could make a decision on the legislation within weeks but could extend a timetable to as long as early next year.
Some EU countries such as Britain have already introduced or will soon introduce laws based on the new ruling, which will be seen as a blow to Google, Apple Stores, Facebook and other tech giants fighting privacy battles.
Companies will have 24 hours in which to respond to a request by an individual for the release of personal data, after the EU’s privacy chief, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), rules.
Companies will also have 90 days to reply to the request or face being penalised.
But privacy groups are concerned that a delay of this amount could encourage companies to make data requests before a judge has ruled on a case, a practice that could undermine the courts as it opens the way
