Gramophone A2
You know it’s a Gramophone when you can play something that sounds like a bird chirping. A2 is not as easy to make as the standard A, but it’s a good start in our selection, and has pretty bright highs and a decent clean midrange. That’s good for many modern tunes but not so good for some jazz and pop songs where mids and highs are the big issues. If you want an A2 with a little more headroom, you’ll be able to find a G2 by Zildjian (but only for a short period of time).
Gramophone G2
When it comes to sounding good in an upright, an upright or upright-guitar bass (like a G2) or a big upright bass (like a Zildjian) is the best choice. This bass is a tad more aggressive in the upper registers but has a brighter midrange and a nicer clean voice. If you’re trying to decide between an upright and this bass, you’ll probably find yourself buying the upright — you’re probably fine with the lower register and bass that come with it.

Gibson Classic G33
The most popular bass in its category, the Gibson G33 is an old hat for rock and blues players. If you’re looking for a really bright tonal response and good midrange, it’ll suffice. The G33 makes an excellent bass for those seeking a very bright and full tone.
Gibson ES335
If this bass was all about sound, the ES335 would be the winner. The ES335 had both the most aggressive upper midrange of the four, and a mellow and balanced lower midrange with its crisp highs and rich mids. Its tone, however, falls slightly short of the G33.
Harmonix Triton
The Triton gets the top spot on this list because it isn’t just a great-sounding instrument — it sounds good to boot. The Triton is a nice little jazz-rock instrument, and it’s a good choice if you want a big and bright bass with a really nice high-end.
