“The most important thing for the American people to understand at this time is that the Russian government was behind the hacking of the Democratic National Committee,” a senior U.S. intelligence official told NBC News. “It is an important part of their effort to interfere in our election, whether it was the Russians or others who are in Russia.”
The FBI, CIA and other intelligence agencies are probing what they believe was a Russian hack of the DNC, the official said. But they did not believe the activity was intended to influence the U.S. election, the official said.
“We don’t see that as a high enough level to put someone into any sort of position to affect an American election.”
Some of the hackers working for the Russian government were known to the intelligence community, according to those familiar with the intelligence.
At the FBI, two senior law enforcement officials told NBC News that it was the assessment of the agency’s counterintelligence team that the Russians were behind the DNC hacks.
