Here is my ventriloquist puppet. The first thing we do is lay down the fabric, but not the whole fabric.
And then, using a large piece of yarn and a little bit of sewing, we weave the fabric around the stuffed animal. And now the stuffed animal is our puppet. Now that we have woven it, that means, there is no need for a handle. It is completely safe to put it inside the case, even if it’s on the other side of your neck.
There is a lot less danger, especially in the back of the neck.
What about the head? In my picture the head might be a little bigger in size. In fact, you really don’t need to enlarge it, unless your puppet needs more volume in order to stay still when speaking.
When we wrap it, we wrap it so that it sticks out all the way into the case.
Doesn’t it look like a big head? Now that it has to move, we have to wrap it properly. And then we can move it around inside the case, so we don’t have to worry about its coming off.
If you do a ventriloquist puppet with a rubber head you can go to any costume store and get some rubber head. It should last you a long time.
If you get foam dolls, you should use that foam, but foam is not a good prop for ventriloquism.
You have to be careful using the foam. It will only get in the way. Plus, it can be soft and mushy. In the back of the neck, if you use the foam, it shouldn’t fall off, but the body will definitely move and sometimes the head will come off the case by itself.
When we use the foam, we have to make sure it fits within the space the fabric takes. And then we make sure that the case is secure.
For all the foam dolls, the best thing you can do is make sure, they don’t stay on their sides at all.
If they stay on their sides, they are dangerous, because you can’t get them off. There could be a fall.
You can use a small piece of foam about three inches long. In the upper part of the neck, make a small slit where the head comes out, about two inches in diameter. Put the little piece of foam over the head. It should stay there, but
