No. Production costs and salaries are higher for actors than those paid to create content. If a show had 30 actors, as it often does, that wouldn’t save a dime. But many shows make fewer than that. I often get letters from producers in which they say they had to hire extras to create a moment in a commercial because they couldn’t afford to hire regular people to animate everything they needed.
How do we keep the quality of our animations up?
This is a difficult question. The best companies have very strict guidelines on how they animate and how they show their animations to the audience. They know that the animation is going to be seen by more people than an ordinary commercial. When the show goes viral, if it doesn’t deliver on what they promise, they are out of a job.
I work for two companies, both of which are extremely strict. I know of only one major animation company that offers free, or very cheap, animation services to web-based animators. Because of this restriction, most independent animation companies don’t offer animation services, especially for large budgets.
I think the problem with digital animation is the limitations inherent in the format. Most people, including me, prefer live action over computer animation for many reasons—not least of which is how much easier it is to make. But there is also an important element to animation. It must have live action; it can’t be digitally rendered. That may be a big loss to a company, but it’s also a big loss to its audience. Animators are often trained to do a certain type of production—animation for live action—and don’t have the freedom to go off the beaten path.
How do you decide whose animations should be used on your show?
There will most likely be a process for this. It is also important to remember that it will be some time before the final results are displayed to the audience. In the meantime, you need to decide what you want people to see, and your audience likely has the best idea of what you want them to see. In my show, most of the animators are actors who are hired to appear physically in the story. When the show goes viral, I send everyone on the list a list of the top 12 episodes, which include those that are used to animate for the show.
