Filmmaking isn’t a job; a degree in the subject is a job worth it. In the same way that one is paid more if they spend a lot of time reading about people who write books about computers, it is true that filmmaking is a career that will not be undertaken for a mere money payment.
The importance of a good education
The truth is that it takes more than a high school diploma to be a successful filmmaker. To begin with, it is necessary to have an aptitude for film. Do I need a degree in filmmaking to secure a job?
I have to say the answer is – you can’t. There are plenty of people who don’t find an opportunity because they have an insufficient degree. There are many aspiring filmmakers who know what they want to do in the future but who don’t feel confident enough to pursue it because they do not have enough education. Many of these people, as well as many more will find their careers in the fields of music or drama while they are still in school.
Why does it matter?
If you want to make things that matter to the world, make it now. For one reason or another, life is not fair or easy. So before you can become the filmmaker you want to become, you must put yourself at a point in your life where you can.
It is possible to have a great degree but not necessarily to make a career in your field in order to afford to finance your education. In addition, just because you can pay for the education doesn’t mean it will end up the best experience possible.
