Yes. When I’m older and more aware, I might be able to. But I wouldn’t expect it at this point. It’ll come.
Do you think singing along to the words will make a major difference?
It certainly adds to the power, but you also have to know the lyrics by heart. There’s a lot of learning to do. I think we could start by just hearing the song and seeing how good the beat is. There’s a lot of “aha!”, and that’s actually how you learn what the song’s about. You’ll have the beat, and that’ll help you to hear the words in that musical tone, and really get it!
You’ve talked very highly about having “a lot of music in our heads”. Do you have any songs you’d like to perform now and revisit?
I don’t think anything is off limits—even my own. I’m not like some big pop music star who can’t sing for the rest of his life, where “The Lion King” is a classic.
I like songs with songs. That’s how I’ve got my songs. They can be different every time. I’ll just keep going, keep writing whatever I feel like. One of the songs I wrote with my wife, “Roots,” was about her, and it was really funny, kind of like we were living and working together. I can really sing a little, and I feel like I can sing with a real singer.
Does that mean there’s a chance you can make something pop and commercial with these tunes and songs?
No, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will be. The songs are too different. But it’s fun to think about. If you can’t find something good in the world, that just creates a lot of things, and that’s what’s fun about music.
