The answer is not a big percentage. For one, we tend to measure only those who don’t have a very difficult time with speech. Secondly, a significant proportion of people are able to sing or speak in all languages, despite the fact that language is a universal skill. A study of singing ability by Richard Vreeland found that 20 to 30 percent of all American college students are able to sing by the time they graduate. And, while there is a tendency for people to think in terms of a universal language (that everyone can do some language-specific tasks), this doesn’t hold especially in the case of speech.

This seems to be a common refrain. For example, consider what happens when our storybook hero, Mr. Big, starts learning how to speak with people. Mr. Big’s ability to sing does not change that his speech is in the style of those native speakers he meets with in his day-to-day life. We find Mr. Big in many ways more conversational than other people. And, as you’ll see below, even when he does learn to speak, his speaking abilities continue to be very limited.
While Mr. Big doesn’t have more of a specific language-related skill, he does have a specific musical skill. Music has a universal application. So the notion that speaking languages and singing (or even using your voice to read) are only different ways of saying the same thing seems to be absurd. But it is a fact that we are constantly in conversation with people from other cultures. And some of those people talk like the kind of folks who sing.
One study that does look at the use of language to read a letter found that people who were native Spanish speakers were significantly less likely to read a letter without any reference to the letter’s context than those who were not. This finding is more widely accepted than the finding of a different study that found that people reading a message without any English words were more likely to interpret the message as if the words had no meaning. But the study also used a method where they asked the participants a series of questions about the speaker, and the answer to each question was coded.
