The next generation of smart home products could be coming in 2017.

We’ve seen dozens of third-party smart home products being introduced, many of them having multiple models, and one of them is already in beta test mode with HomeKit. That product is an array of home appliances that can turn a room into a smart home with a system of bulbs, sensors, and other technologies all together called HomeKit. HomeKit is Apple’s entry into the smart home market with a strong emphasis on convenience — all the products work over Wi-Fi and a central database of home objects with names like “Kitchen”, “Living Room” and “Dining Room”. In theory, there will be more than 100 standard HomeKit-friendly appliances (some more advanced than others) including TVs, thermostats, and smoke detectors. But HomeKit devices aren’t supposed to disrupt the existing market of home automation. Instead, the company hopes they’ll offer a way for homeowners to integrate the automation aspects of their home without having to pay to buy a new set of smart devices.

HomeKit is an effort by Apple to push its ecosystem beyond the smart lights on the wall. “HomeKit can be used in the same ways that any other technology that’s built on iOS and can be used by home automation devices including, but not limited to, light bulbs, motion sensors, door lock remotes, smart thermostats and other home automation products,” HomeKit’s website says. “All you have to do is tell Apple HomeKit to turn on and turn off things in the room that you want to control.” In other words, HomeKit products will allow you to control your appliances and lights by simply speaking them. And since many home automation products already have multiple models, that’s actually a very simple way to control one.

So what’s next for HomeKit and the smart home? It’s already in beta test mode, and HomeKit’s products will only use Wi-Fi for now, until Apple expands the range of HomeKit-compatible devices. That is, however, unlikely to take long.
