There’s a whole bunch of things that go into singing in key. Most of the time it’s the vocal technique. The style that they’re using that makes it sound like they’re going back in time or doing something that you wouldn’t do today, even if it’s a little different from what you normally do. They’ll sing in key so that it’s a good representation of what you’d do if you were in the same environment. Sometimes you’ll sing like someone playing the guitar or something. Sometimes you’ll sing in a different register, or in a very different register.

But that’s just the basic technique. It’s all about singing. I have to start listening and figuring out where that voice is in my head and what the range is.
Which way I’m singing is what counts?

The way that you say it is more to do with your vocal range, the range that your voice can be in. If you’re singing in a low F key, then the range that your voice can be in is about F6 to F7. So F6 to F7 would be the top of your key, which would be where I might think of F5 or F6 or F7. As you sing into a higher chord, you start to lose a lot of range, so you’re going to start to lose more and more of your range up in the chord, and then it starts to become a different voicing. That’s the kind of thing that I try to focus on.

Is that in your practice routine?
Yeah, I usually start on the lowest string and work my way from there. I like to try to bring my voice up to a certain pitch and then find that place of a sound through the chord and my singing. I like to try and create a melody that’s in the same key as the chord that I’m singing on. If I’m singing a line of music and I have chord shapes that are very similar to that song, then I know where the tune is going to be.
Are there vocal exercises that you use?
Most of the time I don’t use any vocal exercises in my training. I do use some exercises when I’m working on one section a lesson, but the most I actually do is when I’m working on two songs a night. That doesn’t really help with the technique, but it does give me a few good vocal exercises to work on so that I’m not
