Sigourney Weaver, who played the mother of the group in the movie version of The Terminator, said no. “No, not at all,” she said. “You can go in any church, any synagogue at any time and sing, sing, sing.”
And yet, Weaver said, “that doesn’t have much to do with religion.” She is not interested in being “anti-religion,” she said. But the way she sees it, “You shouldn’t be preaching to people — you should be preaching to yourself in the way you work.”
It’s interesting to compare Weaver’s personal views on religion with that of her daughter, Sigourney Rose. Weaver and Rose have a close relationship now with their families. They have gone to the wedding of their daughter. “I was very, very happy for Sigourney,” Weaver told MTV News, a day before she died of breast cancer last week. But Rose said “that was an accident. That was my mom. I’m very happy for her.” But it’s difficult to compare Weaver and Rose’s beliefs, because Weaver had a different view from Rose on religion — the movie, her role as the mother of the group in the Terminator franchise and her advocacy for LGBT rights.
Weaver, at a time when people say religion has had a negative effect on the country, said in an interview with MTV News last month, “The Christian right has been demonized.” She went on, “[Religion] is one of the few issues where there are people who are trying to keep all the other issues out of it. I’m no religious person, but I have felt the pull of religion for some reason.”
Weaver had a strong religious faith in Scientology, and she told MTV News she is grateful to people like David Miscavige and his team for helping to bring the religion “to people who don’t know what it is.” Weaver said she has also found a way to “be myself, but express myself in the way I have a right to express myself on my own personal level.”
It’s difficult to compare the lives of the Weaver and Rose families, because not every family, or child, has that privilege. But the difference between them is clear.
“You gotta remember where we’re at as a country. We’re not just talking about politics as usual,” said Weaver.
