Gel/Soft Gel: In the US, we’ve come up with a term for the gel you use to wet your hands before you rub/scrub with your fingers. There are a few different kinds, but the important distinction is that for every wet or dry contact with water, it has to have something solid within it from gel to hard gel.
The distinction between wet and dry touches is usually hard- and soft-gel, so a lot of the wet stuff in a soap/cream/etc. doesn’t come from a lotion but from a gel. A very small number of brands have gone so far as to make a “washable, slip-off gel” to allow the hand to be rubbed with the fingers or a brush.
Soft Gels: These are more delicate (but still have plenty of gel in them to provide some lubrication) as they are less likely to be made of hard gel but more likely to be made of a gel.
Gel Hardeners:
Hard (or hardener-y) Gel: These are more resistant to the action of water. If it’s a lot of water or is not in contact with a lot of moisture to provide an amount of lubrication, then it will resist being absorbed into the skin. Sometimes these gel hardeners will absorb water onto its side of the packaging, making it more resilient.
A good example of a soft gel are lotions, lotions that are made from oils. It is also possible for a lotion to contain a hardener, as well as any sort of gel. Often a lotion will appear wet with excess water or gel but then when the skin is rubbed with the fingers, a thin layer of hardener will appear. The amount and type of hardener will determine how much lubrication is provided by the gel; some soft gels contain hardeners of less than a quarter of the total weight in the lotions, while some harder gels can contain as much as a half teaspoon of hardener.
Hardeners/Vitamins: Hardeners can be vitamin (A, B, C, D, E, or F) or mineral (alum, iron, zinc, calcium…). The amount of hardener may vary by brand and by preparation of the product or the type of hardener used.
