When to use tarmac ?
If you are flying without a cockpit, you will need tarmac. You can also be in a closed plane when you need a solid surface. For large scale use at night you will need the gel phase. When we get a helicopter for an aircraft crash a lot of the glass on the plane needs to be melted off. I’ve tried to explain this to the crew of the helicopter where necessary and they can get back into the cockpit and use tarmac to get back in. What should I do if I want to use tarmac for a large scale crash ?
You need a solid surface. As the aircraft sinks in mud and water, the tarmac will separate and you need to use gel. If the aircraft is covered in mud the gel phase will not work. The gel phase will break from the aircraft. The reason tarmac has been used in large scale is it is more durable than a solid surface. You will still require a solid surface, just not at the expense of safety.
Do I need to place tarmac on my aircraft ?
Tarmac is designed to be used for transport at night. If you are flying from Perth to Melbourne or from Melbourne to Perth then tarmac will not be possible.
Where is tarmac usually used ?
Tarmac is used as part of a recovery operation from an aircraft on the ground or after an incident on an aircraft in flight. In Australia, a major use of tarmac has been a recovery operation of the Australian carrier Qantas at Sydney airport following the collision of the Qantas QF35 with the Qantas QF90 during its landing at Sydney airport in March 2015. If you are flying from Perth to Sydney, tarmac can be used as an interim recovery surface until a surface has been acquired and there will be a recovery operation.
How can I ensure that I don’t hit tarmac ?
Although there have been several high profile crashes and large scale crashes with tarmac in Australia to the extent that it is used every day by aircrew and ground personnel, at a large scale crash a solid surface is required. When the safety margin on the tarmac is very small tarmac becomes ineffective.
