When I started doing this, I was a bit of a perfectionist. I didn’t like to see mistakes, especially in my pitching arm. That’s what helped in this case. I was trying to be as good as I could possibly be, and I would make a mental note and try to take the perfect action to fix it.
I think the same thing you were getting from throwing a fastball is coming more naturally from a breaking ball. I think you’re able to throw a much more advanced pitching ball out of this.
That’s probably for the worse in terms of the pitch it gives you because it would be much worse if you were using it for something else. But I think that’s the best thing that could happen, is that it should make you better at everything you do.
Are you a bit of an emotional person? You say you’d like to get to the pitch you’re perfecting more often.
Yes, I have. I think part of the reason I started doing some of these things is to feel that something was different in me. The biggest thing is to let whatever pitch you’re doing go and don’t go to that mental state. This is the only thing I think I can do.
As a baseball player, it just makes sense. And then, I’m a personal trainer. I can’t really get into a full breakdown about why. I love what I do and I love helping people, so it makes some sense. But it’s hard to explain on a personal level.
Is there anything you think everyone can do differently or what you’re going to try for next?
Just a lot of different things. It’s not just that I’ll try different things, I think there’s some great ways of teaching different things and there’s definitely going to be changes. The big change is going from that mechanical point to that pitching point.
If you’ve got an advanced breaking ball in the back of your mind, you should try to make sure that it’s going to work out for you the next time. But you don’t necessarily have to worry about perfect mechanics on something. If you can look for a lot of things that are specific to your situation—and the timing to take the ball for maximum distance on a breaking ball—you could put the mechanics at the back of your mind before you even swing.
