A quarter. A half. Or a semitone. And then all of a sudden you look back at the scale and there’s a whole octave of things that are smaller than a quarter! So, by the time you’ve learned the whole scale, you’ve learned most of what would have been what was previously known, but it isn’t everything.
Now the problem is that this is just the basis of the scale. So, if you want to learn a guitar part, then you’re going to need to spend time on the theory side of things, because the guitar is not a very straightforward concept.
And we know the theory side of things is a little bit trickier – you’re not always going to be happy with some of the things you get taught in theory until you’ve gone from there to that side of the spectrum. So we have to spend a few more days here, and if you have a friend who’s a full professor, you’ll have to go through all of it.

What do the notes mean?
So what’s the scale going to mean when it’s written out? Well if you’re a guitarist, it’s going to be really easy to read the words, because you can read what’s written out. But in fact, the easiest way to read the notation – that of a standard guitar sheet – is to just listen to the music, especially if it’s long or very complex.
So now let’s go back to the music before we start working on a guitar part. What do the notes mean? Well they mean you’re going to be working with two notes, but you’ll have to read this one out twice.
If it’s a Cmajaj7 chord, you’re going to start at note A on the guitar and play the third note of your right hand.
So instead of playing the notes one after the other, you’ll have to play them one at a time one by one, so that when you play Cmaj7, you play it on the second finger, and you’ll start on the first finger, and you’ll play it on the third.
So this means you’re going to be using the first finger. If it’s a G7alt chord, you’ll start with G7 and start the string one octave lower at the second fret.
