Tone, which I would take to mean a musical tone, is a musical measure that can differ in various ways. The tone of each note depends partly on the musical key the instrument is playing in, the length of the notes that are being played and their tonal density, but also on other musical factors.
Most musicians would agree that the pitch between A and C is fairly neutral. This is because the pitch (or the range of voices) of the notes that make up the tone of C is also fairly neutral. So, there was no need to alter the pitch of A to achieve a different tone.
