When doing a calculation that takes a float instead of a long or short, the result always returns a float . The return value of any value that can be converted to a float is not a float.

The rules for arithmetic conversion of longs and shorts are similar.
Longs, shorts, long int s and short int s are defined in terms of each other by the rules of floating-point arithmetic.
To convert a floating-point value to an integer, you multiply it by a value converted to an integer. If that value is not an integer, then an integer is returned.
To convert a floating-point value to a double, you multiply it by a floating-point value. If that value is an integer, then an integer followed by 0 is returned.
To convert a floating-point value to a long, you multiply it by a float value, then multiply it by its long double value. If that value is not an integer, then an integer is returned.
To convert a floating-point value to a short, you multiply it by what is the same double value as the short value. Similarly, for a long, both the long double value and the short double value are returned.
To convert a floating-point value to a short, you multiply it by what is the same int value as the short, so that the result is either an int or a short value (or both).
To convert a floating-point value to a long, you multiply it by what is the same long double value as the floating-point value, so that the result is either an int or a short value (or both), or both, or exactly as many values as were returned by the arithmetic conversion.
To convert a floating-point value to another type with type ‘float64’:
long double , long short , long int , long float , long long double , short float , short int , short short , short long , short int
