What I think it says is that, hey, the plot is all great in theory, but it’s all very different in practice. The characters we just met have not met each other in person before. That makes it quite hard to get all of the subtle layers to come together.
We’ve been talking about the idea that the setting of this is very different from the setting of the first series. How did you decide upon the sort of set that you’ll go with for the second one?
It was actually a good suggestion to have different settings around the world. So it doesn’t fall into a pattern of being a city-state or a country. We wanted to put the story in a different part of the world, which helps you expand the world.

It also helps us create a bit of tension there… for readers who haven’t done the prequels, this might feel a bit weird, as something from within the Star Wars universe.
Yeah, so there’s a little bit of ‘oh, we’ve got to make sure we’ve got some characters who know who Luke is. Can Han and Leia go to the wedding with Darth Vader? How will Han and Leia know one another? They’re so new. How do they feel about them? How are they going to react to them?”
It’s great to get some new information before you get to the wedding, and there were some great Easter eggs. One thing you may not know is that that’s actually where Ben and Leia were brought. It’s actually in a temple on the edge of the space battle. That’s in the first movie. So that’s something I’m really excited to show you.
But that’s why it’s important to set your expectations low. You’re in the middle of The Force Awakens, but you’re also really familiar with the first three movies.
