You need training to see what the right pitch is, and that can take a while. It is possible, though, and it is really rewarding (I’ve even been able to teach myself to do the melody while reading my newborn son’s first book!).
I always thought it was odd singing in front of the children, seeing how we normally didn’t do it, and I thought “this is not a good way to teach people to sing”. I did some reading about what is and isn’t a bad way to sing. And then I decided to do it. To show to the kids that singing is actually something that happens to people, not something that only the great musicians do. So here, for all of my students:

Here are some more things you might want to know:
You don’t always need to know the notes and shapes for your instrument to listen to other people sing.
There are different ways you can sing, and they all have a unique character and ability that might help you in another way.
I’ll be adding pictures to this article as I learn the different styles, and will update this page as needed. But for now, here is what I know:
Don’t just sing what others say you should be singing.
Use your own voice, for singing on the subway or in the park with your kids is a lot easier than singing to something you know or like.
If you think your voice is good enough, you have nothing to prove.
You can sing with your eyes open, in an open hand to practice with. Use eyeshadow to read your lyrics.
You can sing for other people that aren’t children, for you will sing for others when you are not alone at home.
Be aware of your audience. Sing that one, small tune that you think you hear someone really like, but you will hear some very different voices.
Do not sing that song if you are not comfortable singing with the other people in the audience.
You can sing for more than one person – use a few different voices.
Don’t sing that song if you don’t sing with those people in the audience.
There is always room to be in an audience.
Learn and practice until your voice sounds good enough to sing with.
Don’t practice, don’t learn. Learn and practice all the time.
