Are Illusions Magic? – How To Do Magic Tricks Easy For Kids

When it comes to thinking about Magic: The Gathering, “Illusions” could be the most popular spell in the game. The keyword allows you to manipulate the environment around your opponent to force them to lose.

It’s really simple to understand: if you choose to cast this powerful spell on your opponent on their turn, you get to re-roll all of their cards. If you’re good (or evil) they are forced to deal with this. In short, this spell is a game-changer. If you play it correctly you can have the effect of a giant brain fart and you will have more power over the game than those around you. But that’s an exaggeration.

Let’s go back to your first example. In an upcoming column, I’ll be talking more about Illusions Magic but for now let’s talk more about how Illusions Magic can be played in actual play.

Illusions is easy: you have two players, one player playing Illusions and the other player not. Their hands are drawn. Their decks are drawn. Everything is ready. There aren’t any draws, no cards to trash, no cards to discard — this is all set up before they even start playing! So if you were a Magic player before, you will feel right at home with Illusions Magic.

You’ll see this when you look at this very simple example. When you cast Illusions, you draw 2 cards and replace them with 2 cards. That is, from your opponent’s hand, you can draw 2 cards and then cast Illusions, changing you two cards into 2 cards.

The first person to have a 4+ draw on their next turn wins the game (though if you have no spells in hand you lose). But if you don’t have Illusions Magic to steal your opponent’s opponent’s draw (or if you just draw on your turn), you are out, which makes it very tempting to run into that one Magician you didn’t want to have to deal with.
