Are people good because they can talk? Or because magic is a product of our brains, and if we have magic in our brains, we use it. If it is something that happens to us, and not something we do, how does magic work to heal us? Is it genetic? Or brain chemistry? Can it be learned? Or is it something we are born with? I am thinking about the third possibility as I write here.
There is no way to know for sure. You must try. It might help to go into a room that used to be filled with people, and ask the old man to open it. You might be able to see a small bit of memory, or a small hint of truth in his words, or you might not be able to see anything of anything at all. If you try, that may be what you get. If the answer is not very interesting, try again. If it is, try harder next time. Don’t be afraid to say no. Don’t take it personally; try again. If the answer’s not interesting to you, try harder a different time, a different day. If it is very interesting, try harder at some other time, a different moment in time. Try again if you get an answer that is interesting, and if nothing else comes to mind. Don’t take it personally. Try again, until the answer you get is satisfying, and you decide it is worth trying.

As with all things VR, development has been a challenge, and with all the new and different game design approaches it seems the genre hasn’t settled on anything as standard yet. Some of that will be because we can see the potential in new ideas, and some will be because developers are more concerned about what it is they can offer right now instead of where they should go with it. Either way, the biggest lessons we want to learn from the industry so far has been how to create engaging systems but not be too complex, and the one thing VR hasn’t been good at is crafting interesting experiences with a consistent pace like we’ve seen from indie hits like Gone Home or Firewatch.
