How do you keep the music of The Jungle Book going?
To listen to the game’s soundtrack is to get closer to its characters through their songs. “A Song of Storms,” for example, is written by Lee Ranaldo, who was the lead singer in the band The Wombats. (He also sings the theme song to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.) In the past, Ranaldo has collaborated with director Ron Howard on movies like Braveheart and The Godfather. Now he’s on board for the live-action film.
When you see it, will this be at an open-air theater?
A little. We’d like to show it at the San Diego Convention Center.
Can you give me an idea of a time you got on the air?
The last time we aired was on Dec. 19, 2006, after a marathon three-hour marathon. It was the first time I had the opportunity to be in a living room with a large audience. People who had never seen music and video games together were watching a movie.
What can you say about the new animated Disney movie, The Emperor’s New Groove?
Director Alfonso Cuaron is an important collaborator. When he created The Emperor’s New Groove, as a character, he didn’t intend to do it in the conventional way [as] a children’s movie. The movie is meant to be a meditation on the relationship between the human world and technology. Our main character, Caine, is a cyborg who is connected to the Emperor’s machine and his people. And our film also has a very spiritual story, in which people are trying to make sense of what is happening to their world.
The first time she heard the news from her doctor, she asked about it. The doctor told her, “It’s a bone marrow transplant.”
She immediately said no. Not to her husband or kids. Instead, she told her doctor that, because the blood she now had wasn’t her own blood, she didn’t need to tell them. “I felt so violated to no end,” she says. Her husband, who had been a soldier in Afghanistan, was also shocked. “He didn’t know any better.”
