The truth is that a contralto can sing virtually anywhere, from the rooftops of skyscrapers to the floor of a shopping mall. Many singers prefer to sing in their native style, the “contralto” or “soprano.” The standard contralto voice is a deep-voiced voice, with deep low-frequency, deep, deep-toned low-res notes (or “tonal range”). Contralts range in age from five to seventy (though many are still very young). The average age is just over 30. This type of voice is the kind you hear in a radio commercial, or in television commercials, where the singer sings with what you might call “contralto-like” phrasing. But it’s not a contralto.
Contralto-like vocal chords that are sometimes called “co-soprano” or “contralto-like” are more accurate phonemes than contralto phrases. They are more like a soprano’s voice than a contralto’s, and use higher-res notes. Contralts also have a deeper and less deep bass. So when you listen to a soprano, you usually hear her singing with a less shallow bass sound. When a contralto uses a lower-res bass, you are usually hearing the contralto. And when a contralto sings, you are probably hearing a low-pitched soprano.
The word “contralto” is derived from the Latin con- to “under” and tritone” to “voice.” (I should clarify that “Soprano” was a term used to describe the voice of a young adult, not a middle school student.) In the 1930s, the word “contralto” was first used for voice, and in the 1950s, for singing ability. Today, “contralto” is a term primarily used to describe the deep range of a contralto’s singing. (It’s also the name of the popular “contralto” singing group—which also does well as a band.) There may be more to the question than you think. If you’re used to learning a contralto voice, this is probably not the voice for you. It’s not an automatic voice. A contralto’s voice is likely more comfortable when you are not sure of its pitch, and therefore are less likely to get nervous.
