There are two different styles of batting on the Test and one-day cricket pitches, which make it highly unusual for women to play Tests on their own grounds.
The Australian women’s team have been playing only Test cricket in their country’s national stadium and stadium, because it is smaller than other ground in the country and is not a regular ground for women’s cricket – and because it has a more limited length for men’s matches.
“It is extremely rare for women’s cricket [to play against] different pitches to those used for men’s cricket,” said former Australian captain Julie Taylor.
“It is because the women’s cricket pitch is smaller that we are playing Test cricket at our home ground in Adelaide, which is about the same distance as the men’s grounds.”
In fact, only one other men’s Test venue is currently bigger than the ground that women’s cricket cricket is playing in: the WACA ground, which is 2.2 metres (nearly seven feet) longer than the men’s.
But there are still other grounds in the country where women are playing Tests and the women’s cricket pitches are at least the size of that which men playing Test matches are used to playing.
The WACA grounds are approximately 30m long; the Adelaide Oval grounds is 23.8m long; the WACA ground at Maitland Park is 23.1m long; and the WACA ground at Adelaide Oval is 23.06.
Women’s Test cricket being used in a venue larger than a men’s Test grounds?
The Women’s Ashes Test played in England was played in England last spring. The women’s Test match at Lord’s, also played in England last summer was played at the WACA grounds. The match was played in a smaller ground – and also had fewer spectators.
The WACA is the only Test venue within Australia’s borders that accommodates women’s cricket at times.
WACA grounds – the shorter length for the men (see above) at Lord’s and Maitland Park – does not appear to have been an excuse for women’s cricket being used here – at least not in their eyes.
“I think there are a lot of things going on at Lord’s and Maitland Park and they definitely didn’t want to be doing that,” Taylor said.
