It’s not a hard question to answer.
In this post, I’ll share what the most commonly used note types are within Datalog, and some tricks that can help you pick the optimal note.
Datalog is one of my favorite projects. It is so easy to use that almost anyone can use it. But it is not a standalone note-taking app, nor does it come with any pre-defined set of note types. If something goes awry your first instinct might be to just jump back into Datalog, and try to figure things out.
The thing is, it isn’t just about the note types. You’ll quickly learn that when using Datalog for anything more than notes, you have to have enough time and effort to keep track of the various tags. This isn’t just a matter of having enough time, you also need to have the means to keep track of all the details in your database. The “data structures” need to be managed as well as the notes.
What is a note on a page?
You may be saying to yourself “why should I need to know that?” and “what is all this about data structures?”. Well, let me just be honest… I need to know what notes have been created this session, and how do I go about getting it right? Do I have to know what is a title of this note or which tags have been added to this one?
The fact that I don’t know these things on a daily basis helps my workflow. I don’t have to be there to track every single record within Datalog. I just need to be able to see the notes for the day.
In Datalog, note types are just tables which contain the information about a record. They are called “tags” because I don’t have to know much more about tags than I know about names, tags, and namespaces. I can then use this information to easily extract the information for that same record.
A note is really just an instance of a tag. This isn’t to say that it can’t store data as the information does exist within it. I will discuss tags in a bit. To sum up, each tag has a title, a description, and a name for its location. There is also a category which can easily hold metadata about that tag; for example: the “notes” category would usually contain a tag with the name “notes” for its title
